"Confused and discouraged about my career path, the Academy definitely pointed me in the right direction."

I had always wanted to try my hand at business, but the thought of attempting to learn a brand new subject was daunting. I also had a great fear of public speaking which prevented me from taking many opportunities in the past. But then the Academy opened up for the first time at my local college so I took a bit of a risk and applied.

Because the course focused on the practical side of things as well as theory, I found it very easy to pick up new concepts by putting them into action. The course also broadened my awareness of the range of different business activities going on around the world including some fantastic social enterprises.

I ran a handmade jewellery business during my time at the Academy and enjoyed developing a wide range of skills. Running my own business was one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done; being in control and having power over my daily tasks most definitely gave me the motivation to be successful.

The Academy course has had a significant impact on my life as I now know what I want to do in the future: I want to be a highly successful business consultant whilst running business ventures on the side to help boost the local economy.

Having completed the course I was awarded Business BTEC Student of the Year 2013, out of over 700 people. The course helped me to stand out above the rest, as I’m sure it will help me to do in my future business ventures.

I am now studying Business and Management at Durham University. The Academy without a doubt got me exactly where I wanted to be and I aim to excel in everything I do.
