"I have two children and was made redundant. I always dreamt of starting my own business, but didn't know how."

“I have 2 children and was made redundant when I started my maternity leave with my second daughter in 2007. I dreamt of starting my own business and had many ideas but lacked the know-how to get started.  I did all the Business Link one-day start-up courses, and read everything I could about starting a business. However, none of these actually helped me enough to start a business. It was the Academy’s short adult course that helped me crystalise my vision, channel my passion and helped me gain the confidence to realise my dream.

The school hours of the course worked well for me - I put my children on the school bus at 8am near Winchester, drove to Amersham (over 70 miles on three motorways) for the 9.30am start. I left college at 3pm, and got back to collect the children off the bus at 4.30. It was a bit hit and miss on a couple of days, and I wouldn’t necessarily recommend travelling quite this far. But if you want it to work, you can make it work.”
