Daniel Arundel

"I had really bad anxiety at school, but starting my own business gave me something to focus on."

Daniel Arundel first started trading in baked goods back in 2012, aged 16. Struggling to find a job during the recession, he decided to turn his long-held passion for baking into a business venture. He secured a free stall at a market in Oldham town centre and began selling delicious homemade cakes and other sweet treats to customers, before expanding to markets across the whole of Manchester.

Then, in 2013, Dan signed up to the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy at Oldham College, which, he says, gave him the skills to grow his business. He achieved a huge amount while studying with us, fully launching the Arundel Bakery, finishing second in our National Entrepreneur of the Year competition – for which he picked up £1,000 investment – and graduating with distinction.

Dan has since established his own permanent premises in Oldham and recently finished runner up in the Edge Challenge, receiving £1,250 to put towards his company. He has also been awarded a grant of £3,000 by the Oldham Business Leadership Group and earned a nomination for Oldham One Business’s prestigious Young Entrepreneur of the Year accolade. The Arundel Bakery has been showcased at global exhibitions and caters regularly at corporate events, weddings and other special occasions.

Having struggled with anxiety at school, Dan spends time campaigning to raise awareness of mental health issues.

He says: “I’ve been working hard for a long time to get the bakery to this stage and I’m thrilled to have achieved my goal of opening my own shop. I’m now looking forward to taking the business to the next level, opening more bakeries around the country.

“I started working at my mum’s sandwich shop when I was nine and it was there that I discovered a passion for baking. I had really bad anxiety at school, but starting my own business gave me something to focus on. The academy really brought me out of my shell and helped me build up my confidence.

“At the Arundel Bakery, we specialise in premium cakes and desserts for customers with food allergies, ensuring that all our products are handmade with the best quality ingredients. We cover four different product ranges: gluten free, high protein and low fat, dairy free, and fruit pies and crumbles. We’ve also developed environmentally-friendly packaging.

“I’m delighted to be open for business.”
